According to the newspaper Expansión (2-18-2020), in 2020 there were 30 corporate operations (carried out or in the negotiation phase) in the renewable energy generation sector in Spain for a value of 21,000 m. euros, of which nine of those transactions valued above 1,000 m. euros.
These are generally asset purchase operations for the generation of electricity from a solar or wind source.
In addition, there are currently several possible IPO projects for operating companies in the renewable energy sector.
The protagonists of these operations are no longer only electricity companies, but also oil companies (Repsol, Galp, Total BP, ENI, …), large investment funds and also wealth managers of large fortunes ( “Family offices”) that see investing in renewables as a magnificent investment opportunity.
Indeed, investing in renewables can be considered a safe and profitable investment with Internal Rates of Return (IRR) of 4% -5% per year, which is very interesting in an environment of zero profitability of monetary assets.
